Rwanda offers an incredible range of wildlife, landscapes, and cultural experiences, making it one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations.
Volcanoes National Park
- Famous for its mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s premier wildlife destination. Visitors can trek through misty forests to observe these magnificent primates in their natural environment.
- The park also offers opportunities to see golden monkeys, hike volcanic peaks, and enjoy exceptional birdlife.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
- One of Africa’s largest and most pristine montane forests, Nyungwe is a haven for biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy guided nature walks, canopy walks high above the forest floor, and chimpanzee tracking.
- The park is also home to numerous monkey species and over 300 bird species.
Akagera National Park
- Located in eastern Rwanda, Akagera National Park offers classic savannah landscapes and a rich variety of wildlife.
- Game drives provide opportunities to see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and many antelope species. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema are also popular for viewing hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds.
Kigali
- Rwanda’s capital city is modern, vibrant, and welcoming. Visitors can explore local markets, art galleries, and museums, as well as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which offers a moving insight into Rwanda’s history and resilience.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
Rwanda can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons generally provide the most favorable conditions for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.
Dry Season (June to September & December to February)
- The dry months are considered the best time for gorilla trekking and wildlife activities. Trails in Volcanoes National Park are drier and easier to navigate, making trekking more comfortable.
- Game viewing in Akagera National Park is also excellent during this time, as wildlife tends to gather around water sources. Clear skies and pleasant conditions make it ideal for hiking in Nyungwe Forest National Park and for birdwatching throughout the country.
Wet Season (March to May & September to November)
- During the rainy seasons, Rwanda’s landscapes become exceptionally lush and green. Although trekking trails may be wetter and more challenging, this time of year offers beautiful scenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
- The wet season also brings fewer visitors, allowing for a quieter and more intimate safari experience.
