IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • A safari in Uganda offers one of the most unique wildlife experiences on the African continent. Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity, dramatic landscapes, and unforgettable primate encounters.
  • From dense tropical forests and snow-capped mountains to vast savannahs, winding rivers and spectacular lakes, Uganda offers an incredible variety of ecosystems within a relatively small area. The country is home to ten national parks, each offering distinct wildlife and scenery.
  • One of Uganda’s most iconic destinations is Murchison Falls National Park, the country’s largest national park. Here the mighty Nile River forces its way through a narrow gorge before plunging over the spectacular Murchison Falls. This dramatic landscape provides a habitat for elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos and one of Africa’s largest populations of Nile crocodiles.
  • However, the highlight of many visitors’ journeys is the opportunity to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site protects almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, offering one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on earth.
  • Another must-visit destination is Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most diverse and wildlife-rich parks. Here visitors may witness the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector along with elephants, buffalo, antelope, and a variety of birdlife.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
  • A visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the highlight of most Uganda safaris. The park protects almost half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas and offers visitors the rare opportunity to track and observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
  • Beyond gorillas, Bwindi is also home to more than 120 mammal species, nearly 350 bird species, and an extraordinary diversity of butterflies and plant life.

Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most popular safari destinations and offers a wide range of wildlife experiences. The park is particularly famous for its rare tree-climbing lions found in the Ishasha sector.
  • Visitors may also encounter elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, chimpanzees and large herds of Uganda kob, along with excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Kibale National Park
  • Kibale National Park is considered one of the best destinations in Africa for primate viewing. The park has one of the highest concentrations of primates on the continent, including chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, and the rare L’Hoest’s monkey.
  • The lush tropical forest environment also supports a wide variety of birds, butterflies and unique plant species, making Kibale a paradise for nature lovers.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

Uganda is a year-round safari destination, although certain seasons provide particularly favourable conditions for wildlife viewing and gorilla trekking.

Wildlife viewing is generally at its best between December and February and again between June and August. These months offer drier conditions and easier trekking through the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Birdwatching is excellent throughout the year, with peak birding opportunities occurring between November and April when migratory species are present.

Dry Season in Uganda
  • Uganda has two main dry seasons, from December to February and June to August. During these months, vegetation is thinner and animals gather around available water sources, making wildlife easier to spot.
  • The dry season is also considered the best time for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and other outdoor safari activities.

Wet Season in Uganda
  • Uganda lies close to the equator and experiences a tropical climate with two rainy seasons. The main rain typically occurs between March and May, with shorter rains between September and November.
  • During this time the landscapes become lush and green, rivers are full, and birdlife is particularly abundant. Although trekking conditions can be more challenging, the scenery is at its most vibrant.
